The 1.8 km long and 0.9 km wide Lake Kaltern is not only one of the largest lakes in South Tyrol, but also one of the warmest bathing lakes in the Alps. Water temperatures around 28°C allow for a bathing season from May to September. In addition to swimming in the lake or in the public pools at the Lido or Gretl am See, you can enjoy various sports at Lake Kaltern. To name just a few: surfing, sailing, pedal boating, and kitesurfing. Those looking for a change from swimming will find other bathing lakes in the area, including the two Montiggler Lakes or the idyllic Fennberger Lake.
What's special about the south of South Tyrol is the diversity of its hiking areas. In spring, you can hike through the valley floor of the Überetsch and Unterland valleys in South Tyrol, amidst a sea of flowers; in summer, climb up the Mendel Mountains or the nearby Dolomites; and in autumn, hike through golden landscapes with numerous Törggele stops.
